It is ironic just as the internet is opening up communications across the world, that so many companies are using the technology in restrictive ways. If being from the UK and traveling or living abroad then the chances of missing UK Television is prominent. Through internet, it could have been possible to watch BBC iplayer abroad on our computers. Unfortunately it doesnt work out, as BBC has decided to block access to the vast majority of its content by using a technology called geotargeting. Some international radio channels are available, although unfortunately not the local stations but most of them are not. Geotargeting means that the content seen is dependent on the location, so the experience on many websites will be tailored to that individual country.
In some sense geotargeting is good. But unfortunately it seems it is more likely nowadays to block access. Most of the media sites block access outside specific countries; all the UK channels block access to outside the UK, US media sites block people outside the USA. For people living outside the UK, there arrives a time when people miss UK television. Ever since the BBC launched BBC iPlayer there was a bit of hope out there for watching BBC iplayer abroad. However being outside the UK, all what is required is BBC iplayer, which shows television programs are available to play in the UK only.
Of course it is possible to watch BBC iPlayer abroad. A lot of options are available on the internet. Many of them are either costly or just dont work. However, there are just a couple of true options to watch BBC iPlayer abroad. That is reliable methods which always work. The BBC restricts access to its BBC iplayer service by checking the geographic location of the Internet Service Provider used to connect to the internet. If it is located in the UK it can be viewed, if it isn’t then it prevents people from watching.
All that is required to watch BBC iplayer abroad is make it seem as if the spectator is located in the United Kingdom.
