The medieval swords owe most of their development to the Roman Spatha that had been a long sword which was not much effective versus the armor (at that time there used to be very little armor). The Medieval swords had been developed over the passage of time in connection with armor and also in regards to the latest fighting techniques that had involved slashing. The manufacturing of a single sword in the medieval times had required/involved the labor of not one but several men. Amongst them had been the forger, who was a person responsible for shaping the blade, then another person was responsible for finishing the blade, there was a polisher and last but not the least there was another person involved who made the hilt of the sword.
If the maker was talented which most of them were then they could do all of the aforementioned jobs by themselves. Still the sword maker’s products varied in quality. The chemistry of the respective metals that were used for making the swords were not very well known or understood and mostly the finest and the most consistent sword makers became much popular. In the medieval times the countries of Germany, Italy, Spain and last but not the least France excelled in the field of sword making. In these countries there were numerous towns that managed to become the main sword making centers and they remained so for decades to come. Amongst them Solingen Germany is worth mentioning.
Today you may put on your Television set and come across a plethora of films and also television shows that show the knights as having donned the Shining Armor which appears so heavy that one begins wondering how in the world they managed to put it on and carry it all. The question is that did the actual Warriors of the medieval times really carry Medieval Swords and wear all of this armor as well? Well the answer to this question is that the Knights that lived during the Middle Ages did use the Medieval Sword. In fact the gothic Dagger used to be the most popular weapon and was mostly used by the Medieval Knights in that era.
Amongst the other weapons the Battle Axes were also very famous amongst the Medieval Knights as were the crossbows that were the popular Battle Weapon. The main issue with the Medieval Cross Bow at that time had been that is was quite hard to reload, and could be categorized as being useful only when the defending troops were located at a long distance. Another popular weapon had been the Medieval Flair that was often employed whilst in combat.
