British American Tobacco is facing a formal probe by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office. The company stands accused of bribing African government officials to influence tobacco legislation. The cigarette maker says its running its own investigations, via external legal advisers, into allegations of misconduct and is cooperating with the UK Prosecutor. A news report two years ago said B.A.T. had a lobbyist arrange bribes totaling 26,000 dollars for three public officials in Rwanda, Burundi and the Comoros Islands. It is alleged that the bribery was revealed by a former employee, Paul Hopkins. At the time, B.A.T. said they do not tolerate corruption in their business, no matter where it takes place.
